In 1968 Cosecheros Fuenmayor, S.A., made up of a group of winery owners from La Rioja, together with several farmers, invested in the construction of a small, well-focused winery to make high quality wines with character. In 1981 the project was enhanced when the Marquis del Puerto joined the project, adding his name and personal cooperation, at which time the name of the winery became Bodegas Marqués del Puerto, S.A.

In 1987 the Bodegas & Bebidas group purchased the winery and continued the company's policy of positioning the brands in the medium to high end of the market. In 1996 the Marie Brizard Spain group bought the winery, increased the barrel ageing and winemaking facilities, invested in technology and continued its policy of selling a high-end range of crianzas, reservas and gran reservas from the best vintages.
