The stone door that gave way to the El Cerrado vineyard in 1799, one of the Frías-Artacho family vineyards, has been preserved and today welcomes the visitor to Bodegas Riojanas. This date, sculpted in the stone, is the living testimony of the antiquity of this winery.
In 1889, the Gold Medal obtained by the wine of Bodegas Riojanas at the Universal Exposition of Barcelona encouraged the Frías-Artacho family to promote the construction of the Cenicero winery, which they inaugurated in 1890. Thus begins the winery history of this saga that has managed to maintain its essence over more than a century until turning Bodegas Riojanas into one of the eight century-old wineries in Rioja that still continue to produce quality wines.
The passion for viticulture and sustainable respect for nature have been at the heart of Bodegas Riojanas’ philosophy since its foundation.
Its commitment to the quality of its wines has always been based on the conviction that only a sustainable activity that preserves its vineyards and the environment, as well as the well-being and development of its community, is a guarantee of its own prosperous future.
Another key factor has been the satisfaction of the needs and tastes of its customers, to which Bodegas Riojanas has been adapting to new times thanks to its dynamic drive. They continue to do so today, for example, with their new limited edition Monte Real range, as well as original wines from the main appellations of origin where the group is present: Viore wines in Rueda, Peñamonte de Toro, Veiga Naúm Albariño from Rías Baixas, Alacer in Ribera del Duero…
The stabilizing factor in a history of constant change has been the Frías-Artacho family of owners. Santiago Frías, current President of the company and fifth generation of the owner family, has been at the head of the company since 2009.
As technical director, he is assisted by the expert Oenologist Emilio Sojo, also a member of the founding family. Under his direction, Bodegas Riojanas was chosen BEST WINERY OF THE YEAR MAGNIFICO PRIZE GUIDE VIVIR EL VINO 2022 and BEST WINERY IN SPAIN 2021 by the professional magazine Vivir el Vino. Very significant is his appointment as BEST WINEMAKER IN RIOJA for two consecutive years among the one hundred best winemakers in the world in the “Master Winemaker Top 100” guide published by the prestigious British magazine The Drinks Business.
